A public meeting to discuss Meaford’s potential development charges is slated for next month.
Meaford has received a study of their development charges and the next step is to meet with developers and the public July 13th, and the By-law will be considered by council July 27th.
Meaford needs to collect $10.2 million for general capital services.
The municipality expects to have 370 more houses by 2024, and a population growth of 610 people.
The study recommends $13,762, or a 15 per cent increase for a single and semi-detached unit, and $9,252 for apartments and townhouses.
The non-residential charge per square metre could be roughly $77 or with water and sewer just over $93.
With water and sewage factored in, development charges could be $16,128 for a single and semi-detached unit, and $10,843 for apartments and townhouses.
Meaford needs to collect $10.2 million for general capital services.
Services include Administration, Library Services, Parks & Recreation, Public Works, Fire Emergency Services, Roads, Water and Sanitary Sewer.
Most of the Development Charges would be put toward water and sewer expansion.
Newly being considered is parking as an eligible service, which would use up about one per cent of development charges.
Director of Finance Darcy Chapman says if council were to consider a 25 per cent decrease in the projected development charges, it would mean they would have to hike taxes by one per cent.
The development charge study requires updating every five years.
The current Development Charge By-law expires August 10th.
