A major redevelopment of downtown Meaford is in the works, with new commercial and residential units proposed for Nelson and Sykes Streets.
Lino Toncic of Dobson Toncic Limited is a developer from the Burlington area who’s company has purchased several properties in the town.
Director of Planning and Building Services, Rob Armstrong, says the multi-million dollar plan would involve some 60 to 80 condos to be built over commercial units on the two streets.
The development would be at the old Canadian Tire location on Nelson, and the downtown buildings on Sykes from Simply Unique to the Fabric Shoppe.
Armstrong says one building would be three storeys tall, while the other would be five storeys with underground parking linking the two buildings.
At this point, Toncic has zoning approval for the Nelson street project although he still needs site plan approval.
Armstrong says because of the underground parking part of the development, Toncic needs to get the approvals for the Sykes Street portion before any construction can begin.
It’s expected work on the project won’t get underway until sometime in 2016.
