Collingwood’s major utility service, Collus PowerStream says it is taking an incident of a Smart meter fire at a Collingwood house very seriously.
The fire took place at a home on Beech Street, early last Sunday morning.
Firefighters extinguished the flames and had the power shut off.
It did not cause significant damage to the home, but residents told local news they were worried because their gas meter is only 3 feet away from the hydro meter.
Collus PowerStream Vice President of Operations Larry Irwin says investigation shows the meter melted, rather than exploded.
He says the issue probably occurred in the meter base rather than the meter.
Collus PowerStream is working with the Electric Safety Authority who is reviewing the incident.
Irwin wants to assure everyone it is not the model of meter that was recalled early this year.
He says “there are literally millions of these installed across the country, and as we’ve been advised, without any incident.”
Irwin says it looks like heat was coming from below the meter.
The Collingwood family had a new meter installed the next day.
