Hi this is Fred Wallace with Off The Wire, brought to you by Auto Logic….the Logical Choice.
These are great days for local sports, no question.
However, NOTHING trumps BIG news from the BIG city, and the Toronto Maple Leafs stole the show once again this week, with the splashy hiring of Mike Babcock as their new head coach.
In typical Leaf fashion, the Babcock announcement squashed another significant announcement and created all kinds of mysterious scenarios.
The hiring of Babcock was awkwardly confirmed as MLSE chairman Larry Tannenbaum & Bell were announcing the purchase of the Argos and the pending shift to BMO Field
Of course that pending shift is not warmly welcomed by the Toronto FC soccer purists, plus it’s curious that Bell is IN on the CFL team while the other Leaf partner, Rogers is not.
So Mike Babcock comes to Toronto to coach a languishing hockey franchise under an internally and externally feuding ownership group, with a relative newbie wielding power as the Hockey President, no GM in place, a mostly useless roster on the ice, all of which is adjacent to a corporate empire that’s losing its superstar President and now owns and operates mostly unsuccessful basketball, soccer and now Canadian football enterprises.
What could possibly keep the Leafs from winning the Stanley Cup in short order ?
I’m Fred Wallace
