Hi this is Fred Wallace with ” Off the Wire “, brought to you by Auto Logic…..the Logical Choice !
Every now and then I get accused of ignoring the female contingent of athletes in this region.
I’m not saying the accusation is accurate, but there’s no question that on a day-to-day basis, I have more male than female content.
In an ironic twist, this week has been filled with very positive stories & interviews with ladies from the area who have excelled in their respective sports.
In a span of days, I’ve spoken to swimmer Joanne Diemert, gymnast Alannah Waller & skier Larisa Yurkiw.
Three different ladies, three very different sports, but a number of common denominators, the most visible being commitment.
Joanne Diemert, who holds Owen Sound Aquatic Club records in the breaststroke, related that she trains 8 times a week in the pool.
Alannah Waller did some math and explained that she spends 16 hours a week doing gymnastics training alone
And Larisa Yurkiw was named to Alpine Canada’s team for the 2015-16 World Cup season, but quickly, and staunchly, related the selection was an administrative formality and that she would remain independent under the Team Larisa banner.
Those three stories, those three ladies, may not totally balance the scales of our local sports coverage, but they are shining examples of what you can achieve, regardless of gender.
I’m Fred Wallace
