Hi this is Fred Wallace with ” Off the Wire “, brought to you by Auto Logic…..the Logical Choice !
The Robertson Cup Championship for the Ontario Hockey League title is set; the Erie Otters will meet the Generals starting Friday in Oshawa.
To me, there was no surprise that Oshawa, the regular season champions in the East, would take their side of the fence, advancing after going 12 & 4 over 3 rounds, eliminating Peterborough, Niagara & finally coming from behind to vanquish North Bay.
For the Generals, this is their first trip to the OHL Final since winning it in 1997 with Bill Stewart behind the bench.
By comparison, I’m truly surprised that Erie, and not Sault Ste Marie, is representing the West.
The Otters who have the best player in Junior Hockey in Connor McDavid, stumbled & struggled early against Sarnia, but rallied to eliminate the Sting, sweep London, and in my view, upset a deeper and more balanced Greyhounds squad for the Wayne Gretzky Trophy.
For the Otters, and their jam packed Erie Insurance Arena, this is their first visit to the OHL Championship series since winning the crown in 2002 under Dave MacQueen.
So who wins ?
History says ” Erie “, based on the fact that dating back to Erie’s 2002 Championship, the Western Conference Champions have won the Robertson Cup 12 of the last 13 times.
….of course, I thought Sault Ste Marie would win the 2015 crown, so maybe the course of history can be altered by Oshawa.
I’m Fred Wallace
