Hi this is Fred Wallace with ” Off the Wire “, brought to you by Auto Logic…..the Logical Choice !
So I’m talking with an out-of-town writer one day, and on a different topic she mentions that as a native of Sault Ste Marie, she will always hold a grudge as it pertains to Eric Lindros and his refusal to report to the Greyhounds…..in 1989 !!
We laugh and both concede that if you went into every OHL market, you would find an incident or an episode that is bothersome years, if not decades, later.
There’s a number of candidates for Owen Sound, in no particular order, surrounding Brayden McNabb, Jeff Kugel and, as we mentioned earlier this week, James Ramsay.
But when it comes right down to it, the one that still fries me was December 12, 2008….at Kitchener.
The Attack were coming off a miserable non-playoff season and held the # 8 playoff spot on that night, just a few points ahead of the Rangers who were in rebuild mode after getting to the Memorial Cup the year before.
On this night, Owen Sound held a 5-4 lead in the last minute when, like magic, David Kolomatis was about to be fingered for a penalty. ( I didn’t see anything, but that’s another matter )
The referee’s arm went up, the Rangers pulled their goalie on the delayed penalty, and Scott Timmins had possession the right wing corner.
Timmins, blindly slid it back to the right point……but there was nobody there and the puck just slid along the boards towards the Kitchener end……and the ref blew the whistle !!!
Owen Sound hadn’t touched the puck, so the delayed penalty should have still been in effect.
Kitchener hadn’t committed a foul, or placed a man on the ice too soon, or gone offside, or……anything
The only possible explanation for the ref blowing it down was…………….well more than 6 years later, I still have my suspicions.
I’m Fred Wallace
