Amazingly, a Public Relations person gave me a phone number and when I called it, on the first ping, I was speaking with Derek Sanderson.
From former Bruin to millionaire WHA refugee, from playboy to rock bottom drunk, there are many labels you could apply to Sanderson, but perhaps the most fitting is ” survivor “.
It was neat to hear Sanderson speak; to his version and often confirmation of stories that have been told for 40 years about his Stanley Cups, his lifestyle, his plummet to the gutters and the recovery that he’s very mindful of.
Truthfully, the most revealing aspect of the interview was Sanderson’s take on his own book, ” Crossing the Line “.
I told him I enjoyed the book, found the honesty and self assessment of his choices to be brutally honest.
To which Sanderson informed me the editors chopped 80,000 words from the text, thinking it was too graphic for the target audience.
I’m sure the book sold well, but likely not well enough for Sanderson who is talking about a future book tour.
Who knows, maybe I’ll hear the 80,000 edited words should he stop in Owen Sound.
