Hi this is Fred Wallace with ” Off the Wire “, brought to you by Auto Logic…..the Logical Choice !
The last time I was in Las Vegas was mid-October………..1988.
So, yes, it’s been a few days, but it seems like only yesterday when you consider the events that transpired during that junket.
On Saturday October 15, 1988 the World Series opened in Los Angeles as the Dodgers hosted the Oakland Athletics.
Because I was in Las Vegas, & because Pro-Line was half a decade away, the prospect of making a ” sports bet ” was overwhelming.
The A’s were huge favorites that night and in that series, and the oddsmakers are NEVER wrong, so I ponied up a sizeable amount of cash on Oakland.
Sure enough, the A’s fell behind 2-0 in the first inning but then did what they were supposed to do, Jose Canseco hammering a Grand Slam to give them a 4-2 lead.
It was 4-3 in the bottom of the 9th, Dennis Eckersley came on to save the game and with a runner on, a hobbled Kirk Gibson hit a pinch hit 2 run homer to win and sewer my wager.
The Gibson Home Run is one of the most iconic moments in the history of the game…and yet I do NOT remember it fondly.
Here’s hoping I have better luck at the Sports Bar betting on the Stanley Cup this week.
I’m Fred Wallace
