Hi this is Fred Wallace with ” Off the Wire ” brought to you by Auto Logic…the Logical Choice. “
There are moments lost in time that reappear in an instant, simply when triggered or activated by contemporary affairs.
Tonight in Owen Sound the Attack play host to the Plymouth Whalers in an Ontario Hockey League game that has major significance for the Attack who are looking to catch Guelph and outrun Kitchener to the finish line.
The Whalers by comparison are finished. Sold to new owners. Destined for Flint, Michigan next season where they will be known as the Firebirds.
The moment in time I recall is a discussion with Owen Sound Platers General Manager Rob Holody around this time of year in 1990.
The Compuware group had just spent $ 600,000 and had been admitted to the OHL.
Holody, who was part of a 4 year Memorial Cup Championship build in Guelph, related the new Group fronted by Peter Karmanos Jr. had ” highly credible ” hockey people and Holody felt the new entry would be championship calibre in half the time it took Guelph.
And Rob Holody was fairly accurate with the Detroit Junior Red Wings going to the OHL Final in 94, winning the championship in 95 and being a perpetual contender.
The Detroit Ambassadors at Cobo Hall, the Detroit Junior Red Wings at the Joe Louis Arena, the Detroit Whalers for a year in Auburn Hills and now Plymouth Whalers are into their final week of existence, which includes a stop tonight at 7 at the Harry Lumley-Bayshore Community Centre
I’m Fred Wallace
