The Grey Bruce Snowmobiles Unlimited Minor Midget Highlanders have known for a looooooong time that they would conclude their hockey season with an international junket to the Czech Republic and Austria.
There are some exhibition hockey games planned as part of the excursion, but this venture was more vacation than competition.
They’ve also known for a long time that this would be their departure weekend.
What they might have visualized but certainly didn’t count on was almost making the Final in the SCTA Playoffs.
Grey Bruce, by all accounts, was a hard working squad who essentially had a .500 record in league play, finishing 7th in the standings.
However, come playoff time, the Highlanders earned a berth in the Final 4 through the qualifying tournament and suddenly found themselves leading first place Halton in the semifinal & just couldn’t seal the deal, losing the series in the 5th & deciding game, climaxed by a heartbreaking 5-4 defeat last Saturday at Chesley.
So in a manner of speaking, it worked out.
The Highlanders will depart as scheduled and the SCTA Final will pit # 1 Halton against # 2 Oakville.
But I’m sure, somewhere during the Highlanders ” vacation ” , someone will lament that Grey Bruce isn’t competing in the SCTA Minor Midget Final.
