The provincially significant Glammis Bog Wetland is growing.
The Saugeen Conservation Authority has been gifted land by Marianne Greer, in the name of her husband Ernie Greer.
Communications Manager Shannon Wood says the Greer family donated 16.72 acres of land.
That means Saugeen Conservation has 116.72 acres of the total natural area designation of approximately 430 acres.
Wood says it’s very significant for them.
That land is designated Class 3 by the Ministry of Natural Resources, only two levels below the highest designation in Ontario.
Wood says anything below a Class 3 ranking is what they call “regionally” significant.
The Ministry of Natural Resources says the Glammis Bog area, biologically, may be the most significant acid bog in the Owen Sound MNR District.
They also indicate that while the bog itself is the most important feature, there are still other species likely not occurring elsewhere in the County.
Wood says the bog itself has been created over thousands of years by natural plant succession or filling in the lake.
