Julie Hastings and her Thornhill rink are heading to Moose Jaw.
Hastings defeated former 5-time provincial champion Sherry Middaugh and her Coldwater rink 9-5 in the championship final on Sunday to win the Ontario Women’s Curling Championships at the Penetanguishene Curling Club.
Middaugh’s team were up 1-0 when Hastings and her team put up four in the 4th end to go up 4-1.
Middaugh missed an opportunity in the 5th that allowed Hastings to steal 1 to take a 5-1 lead.
But Middaugh fought back in the 6th end to grab three and cut Hasting’s lead to 5-4.
Down 7-4 in the 8th and with the hammer, Middaugh could only manage to score 1 point.
That allowed Hastings to take the hammer in the 9th and was able to grab two in that end to put the game away.
Hasting’s team — representing the Bayview Curling Club — have been playing together for 20 years and this is their first provincial championship.
They will represent Ontario at the 2015 Scotties Tournament of Hearts next month in Saskatchewan.
Earlier, Middaugh defeated Clancy Grandy of Mississauga 7-6 in the semi-final.
