I’ve been to the Penetanguishene Curling Club on many occasions…. but never for curling.
In a small community like Penetang, when there’s a big event, it invariably gets staged either at the Memorial Arena, or at the Curling Club.
This week it’s the ultimate combination of curling and socializing as the Provincial Scotties Tournament of Hearts is being contested at the club.
Ten rinks are entered in the field, the most notable being the Sherry Middaugh foursome, more so because of their proximity to the host centre.
Middaugh who has lived in the region for decades will represent the Coldwater Curling Club at the Provincial Ladies Championship and no doubt will have a huge following at the affair.
But that’s not to suggest Middaugh’s rink is the favorite, certainly not with the Allison Flaxey rink of Listowel in the competition just one year after taking the Ontario Scotties at Sault Ste Marie.
The Penetanguishene Curling Club has been the site for some major events through the years; competitive or otherwise, but from a curling standpoint, the Ontario Scotties which begins tonight with Draw 1 at 7 pm is the biggest.
I’m Fred Wallace
