Is there anything more unsettling than having a tiny little secret exposed to the World ?
Around this time in 1981, I was in my final year at Ryerson in Toronto and a few of us convinced the Toronto Marlboros to let us broadcast their games on the campus station- CKLN FM.
It was great fun and you’d be fascinated by the names of the announcers, the players and the personalities who were part of the experience.
That year, Canada won the World Junior Hockey Championship in the United States and I remember interviewing Frank Caprice, one of the Canadian goalies, when his London Knights met the Marlies at Maple Leaf Gardens upon his return.
I’m willing to bet I was one of maybe a half dozen people to interview Frank Caprice, or anyone from that team about the event.
My how times have changed.
Summer camps, Subway Series, Selection Camp, pre-tournament previews, endless hype of the upcoming games, never ending analysis throughout the tournament, where every bouncing puck gets intense scrutiny.
I still like the World Junior Hockey Tournament. But I liked it a lot better 3 decades ago when it was almost a secret.
I’m Fred Wallace
