Hi, this is Fred Wallace with ” Off the Wire “, brought to you by Hal Wright Chevrolet-Cadillac-GMC-Buick on the Sunset Strip in Owen Sound.
Last week, I got to sit on the wrap up banquet for the Van Dolders Home Team Grey-Bruce Junior Golf Tour at Stone Tree Golf & Fitness.
Charlie Wilkinson of Saugeen Golf Club in Port Elgin was the 2014 Junior Champion & the Overall Tour winner with a stroke per round average of 74.
The other divisional winners were Luke Schmalz of Saugeen in the Juvenile Division and Jake Colley from Kincardine Golf Club who took the Bantam title.
Along with the divisional winners, a half dozen players pocketed cash scholarships for their summer on the fairways.
Schmalz, Shane Vollmer ( Ainsdale ), Tyson Rutledge ( Ainsdale ) , Dylan Brown ( Stone Tree ), Chip Glazier ( Ainsdale ) & Kingsley Foris ( Saugeen ) all pocketed between $ 500 & $ 1,000 scholarships for their effort.
The participant numbers aren’t what they once were for the Grey-Bruce Junior Tour, which, to me, is more a reflection on golf these days and the demographics of our region, rather than on the Junior Tour.
In my view, for a $ 75 entry fee & $ 20 per stop green fees, the opportunity to play, meet, compete, have fun & earn some cash makes the local Van Dolders Grey-Bruce Junior Tour an excellent environment for the young golfer.
I’m Fred Wallace
