Hi, this is Fred Wallace with ” Off the Wire “, brought to you by Hal Wright Chevrolet-Cadillac-GMC-Buick on the Sunset Strip in Owen Sound.
On the first warm day of summer this year, I ended up in Craigleith Park, sitting in the shale on a warm Friday.
Out of my beach bag for reading material, I pulled ” The Lost Dream ” by Steve Simmons.
You should know, this was my second attempt to read the sordid revelations pertaining to hockey cling-on David Frost and his disciple, Mike ” call me, Danton ” Jefferson.
The first time I tried to read it in the Midland Library, I stopped in Chapter 4, my stomach and senses so bothered by what I was reading.
I’m not a big reader but I can tell you, I’ve never wanted a chapter to end faster than that one.
Grinding my way through ” The Lost Dream ” there are plenty of tales regarding Frost, Jefferson and the entourage.
Some of them are well known.
Some of them are confirmations of things you’ve heard.
Some of them have Owen Sound connections; one of which I witnessed unfolding at Maple Leaf Gardens but didn’t understand at that moment exactly what I was seeing.
And some of them are kind of funny. Sad-funny.
But mostly, the sequence is pitiful. sad, pathetic and bothersome.
There’s plenty of angles to explore and plenty of questions raised as to how this could happen and be allowed to continue for as long as it did.
And the underlying message I was left with was that parents should be vigilant to the max when it comes to where their children are and how they’re with.
I’m Fred Wallace
