Today & tomorrow are significant days on the annual calendar in Port Elgin.
The 19th annual Jeff Preston Celebrity Golf Classic essentially begins tonight with a social function followed by the golfing tomorrow at Saugeen Golf Club.
Conducted by the Rotary Club, the affair has their Wine & Cheese Social and Silent Auction tonight, an activity that’s designed to thank the tournament’s sponsors and supporters, many of whom don’t get the chance to participate in the golf tournament on Friday.
Tomorrow, the golfers tee off at 11 am and by the time the event is concluded, nobody knows who won, and nobody really cares.
What stands out, year after year, is the sense of pride connected to this event which has supported Muscular Dystrophy research for almost two decades.
The first Jeff Preston Golf Classic generated $ 8,000 in the mid-90’s, and at the time, that was a staggering figure.
What no one foresaw then, and what knocks you over as Year # 19 is upon us, is the historical success of this event which long ago bypassed the $ 1 million dollar mark in revenues generated.
It’s always a good time, but those good times through the years have been heightened by the ongoing success of the annual Jeff Preston Celebrity Golf Classic.
See you tonight
I’m Fred Wallace
