Residents in Markdale will soon have one less food store to shop in.
Sobeys has decided to close the Food Town location in Markdale.
Manager of Communications Sarah Stover confirms the company decided to shut the store because of on-going under performance in sales.
The closure doesn’t leave the village without a grocery store, as the Foodland location at the south end of Markdale will remain open.
It is also owned by Sobeys.
Stover says the 20 staff at Food Town will be offered a chance to move to another store in the area, or will be given a severance package.
Meanwhile, Sobeys is also considering moving its Foodland location in Wiarton.
Stover confirms with Bayshore Broadcasting News the company is looking at different sites in the town for a new bigger store, but says it would still be a couple of years away.
Word on the street is that a vacant lot near Tim Horton’s on the main street in Wiarton has already been sold to Sobeys but Stover would not confirm that.
