Hi, this is Fred Wallace with ” Off the Wire “, brought to you by Hal Wright Chevrolet-Cadillac-GMC-Buick on the Sunset Strip in Owen Sound.
This must be ” Dilemma Month “.
We talked last week about the decision the Guelph Storm had to make with a nothing-to-really-gain-game against London at the Memorial Cup Round Robin.
To the credit of the Storm, they came out and thumped London 7-2. If only Gerard Gallant had been that professional in his approach in 2011……..ah, I gotta get over that, don’t I ?
Well, here’s today’s dilemma.
I had a nice chat last week with Bluewater Rugby Convenor Darcy Werger on the state of rugby within Bluewater schools.
In all honesty, it’s pretty good, especially in the Girls Division where 2015 might have 10 entries competing.
The Boys Division, currently sits at just 3 teams and the dilemma, from Darcy Werger’s viewpoint is one that won’t only impact rugby.
Enrolment in Bluewater Secondary Schools is declining.
Declining enrolment equates to less teaching professionals.
Less teaching professionals means less coaches.
Less school coaches leads to either programs folding or having a resident of the community coach the team which has positives and truthfully, some drawbacks, especially from a ” school as community ” standpoint.
Is there a future solution ?
I’m not sure, but it certainly is a real dilemma facing Bluewater Athletics in the here & now.
I’m Fred Wallace
