Hi, this is Fred Wallace with ” Off the Wire “, brought to you by Hal Wright Chevrolet-Cadillac-GMC-Buick on the Sunset Strip in Owen Sound.
By and large the people I interview are familiar, and as a result the questions are seldom tough or penetrating.
Nevertheless, I did ask a difficult question of Owen Sound skier Larisa Yurkiw.
After an amazing journey that essentially saw her discarded by Alpine Canada and forced to fund herself AND win her way to the Olympic Games in Russia, I asked if she would be reimbursed by Alpine Canada.
The answer quickly was,………………. ” no “.
Then there was a pause, a noticeable pause, which to me indicated a very sensitive issue had been broached.
Yurkiw has openly admitted she wants to ski next year and build on what she called several times during the interview, her ” first Olympic Games. “
I’m not a genius, but reading between the very clear lines, means she fully intends to compete in 2018 at the next Winter Olympics.
Which is quite a set up for Alpine Canada.
Here’s an athlete, incorrectly assessed as not being capable of high standards, one who received zero funding, and then went out & proved without a doubt that she not only was capable but had to pony up the cash, all so she could represent the very country and organization who dropped her.
And now Larisa Yurkiw is aiming to do again, and do it for the next 4 years.
I’d think even Tom Sawyer and his famous fence painting scam would be embarrassed by the situation that exists for Larisa Yurkiw as it pertains to Alpine Canada.
I’m Fred Wallace
