Hi, this is Fred Wallace with ” Off the Wire “, brought to you by Hal Wright Chevrolet-Cadillac-GMC-Buick on the Sunset Strip in Owen Sound.
There’s no doubt the Rich Peverley incident on March 10th was an eye opener and a case in point for being ready and well equipped.
The Dallas Stars forward suffered a cardiac event after a shift against the Columbus Blue Jackets and collapsed.
The Stars bench acted quickly, the medics on hand were there in an instant and Peverley was treated on the spot and then taken to hospital.
Scary for those most involved and somewhat of a cautionary tale for all in hockey at any level.
An NHL venue has the best of everything, or it should.
But what if Rich Peverley was a minor hockey player, a junior, a rec leaguer or just playing pick-up.
Would he have received the same immediate and vital assistance that he got at the American Airlines Center ?
Likely not, unless he was playing shinny with doctors.
The point is, in this day & age, it’s incumbent on almost everyone involved to be ready.
Is there a defibrillator at your facility ?
Do you know where the defibrillator is ?
Could you operate it ?
Rich Peverley is quite fortunate his cardiac event happened where it did.
If it happened elsewhere, at another level, would the outcome have been positive ?
I’m Fred Wallace
