Hi, this is Fred Wallace with ” Off the Wire “, brought to you by Hal Wright Chevrolet-Cadillac-GMC-Buick on the Sunset Strip in Owen Sound.
What an unforgettable WEEKEND
On Saturday we had a sunset dinner cruise
My personal highlight was the dolphin and snorkel cruise
We’re flying tonight….should be home tomorrow night and I know I’m gonna miss this place when I go.
In 1969, Jim Bouton wrote ” Ball Four ” a landmark book centered around major League Baseball and his place in it.
When the book starts, he’s with the expansion Seattle Pilots, a miserable one year crash and burn franchise that morphed into the Milwaukee Brewers.
Early in the book, Bouton, a pitcher struggling to survive with a knuckleball gets sent to the Minors and pitches for the Vancouver Mounties.
The writing is vivid, capturing his depression and worry that this might be it for him.
Then the Mounties go to Hawaii for a series and his fortunes take an upswing, getting work almost every night, excelling against the Minor Leaguers.
As he departs the island, Jim Bouton wondered, if a player was sent to the minors in Hawaii, it would be understandable, maybe even acceptable, if that player refused to leave, even if called up to the Big League team.
I feel somewhat the same today.
A hui hou kakou from Hawaii.
I’m Fred Wallace
