Malaki is such a beautiful month here in Hawaii.
Our never ending list of activities included Smith’s Hawaiian Luau yesterday and the Waimea Canyon
Today, almost everybody is taking the Kauai Helicopter Adventure
Looking at the mountains here on this beautiful island, I wondered if a Hawaiian would ever ski at the Winter Olympics.
Of course, in Owen Sound, we have a World Cup and Olympic skier in Larisa Yurkiw whose debut in the Olympic Downhill in marked the first time in the 78 year history of Alpine skiing at the Olympics that there was a dead heat, a tie, for first place.
Both Tina Maze of Slovenia and Dominique Gisin from Switzerland turned in identical times of 1 minute 41.57 seconds, a rarity indeed.
And in short order, I immediately thought of Hanover Raceway and the great TV giveaway.
Somewhere in the last decade, Hanover Raceway staged a terrific promotion where they gave away a beautiful TV set after each of the first five races on the card.
The trackside announcer, a genius in his own right, quickly found making a draw for a TV after each race was………. boring.
So, to heighten the excitement, he made 8 draws every race and assigned the names from the draw to each horse and the winning horse in the race would win the TV for the corresponding contestant.
Simple ! Brilliant !
Except for the final when ” Lookathergo ” and ” Greycountyqueen ” finished in a dead heat meaning TWO contestants were owed TV’s and only one set was left to dispense.
Ooops !
Thankfully, there was an understanding Race Board and sponsor who made good on the debacle which almost forgotten until Maze and Gisin had their dead-heat this year at the Olympics in Alpine Skiing.
Pa`ahana n au.
