The OFSAA Swim Championships are being staged today & tomorrow at the Wayne Gretzky Centre in Brantford.
Among those competing from Bluewater will be Mike Bohnert of the St Mary’s Mustangs.
At the recent CWOSSA Swim Championships at Laurier University in Waterloo, Bohnert won the 100 metre freestyle to earn a berth at OFSAA.
I put in a call the following day to St Mary’s and while I’d describe Mike Bohnert as being somewhat reluctant, the interview was fascinating.
Most fascinating was the revelation by Mike Bohnert that while he’s certainly a swimmer, he’s not a traditional swimmer.
I’d be willing to bet that almost every swimmer at OFSAA, including the majority from Bluewater come from top notch swim clubs and programs, like the Aquatic Club here in Owen Sound.
Not Mike Bohnert.
He confirmed that he’s most associated with the LifeSaving Club of Saugeen Shores, a group that trains for and competes in elite international competitions in open water.
No, he’s not a traditional lane racer whatsoever, simply thought that joining the school swim team would be a good way to stay involved in something he truly enjoys; being in the water.
Wouldn’t it be something if a non-traditional swimmer won a OFSAA Championship this week ?
Mike Bohnert may have a shot
