Hi, this is Fred Wallace with ” Off the Wire “, brought to you by Hal Wright Chevrolet-Cadillac-GMC-Buick on the Sunset Strip in Owen Sound.
This is the 25th year of OHL Hockey in Owen Sound and it’s unique to see that ties and connections that weave their way through the years, the teams and the fans.
Last Saturday morning as I awoke from a peaceful sleep in the Best Western in Walkerton, I received an e-mail from my buddy Rob Scribner.
Having a slow day on the Sunset Strip and coming to grips with the fact his son, Zach, was turning 17, Scribs wrote that Zach was born on Friday January 24th, 1997 and as much as Zach’s arrival, he remembers listening to the Platers game that night on the way to the hospital.
In Scrib’s memory bank, the Platers were in Guelph…..maybe Kitchener.
Truthfully, I couldn’t remember, so I started to look it up.
Scribs was close.
Friday January 24th, 1997, the Platers weren’t in Guelph. Nor Kitchener. So I tracked alphabetically and found the answer……….SARNIA.
On January 24th, 1997, the Attack lost 9-6 at Sarnia. Future NHL’er Jon Sim had 3 power play goals that night while Christie, Gallace, Williamson, Virag, Paleczny & Walsh scored for Owen Sound.
Interestingly enough, the following night, when Zach was enjoying his first-ever day on earth, the Sting came to Owen Sound and won again; 5-4 with current Sarnia coach Trevor Letowski scoring twice.
So there you go Scribs & Happy 17th birthday to Little Scribs.
I’m Fred Wallace
