There’s nothing like a spectacle to attract attention.
There’s nothing like overkill to cool the buzz.
The National Hockey League held the Winter Classic at Michigan Stadium on New Year’s Day and then followed with outdoor games over the weekend at Dodger Stadium & Yankee Stadium, the most storied venues in all of baseball.
And the NHL is only at the midway point.
Not to be left out in the New York region, the Islanders get their shot at the Rangers at Yankee Stadium tomorrow and then, on back to back dates in March, there are games at Soldier Field in Chicago and BC Place in Vancouver.
Six NHL games, all excessively produced, all hyped to the max, all designed to generate extra interest in the sport & an additional revenue stream.
No question it’s working. Who wouldn’t want to be a part of this ” happening “.
Me.
I was interested in the Leafs-Red Wings game, I watched Kiss at Dodger Stadium and thought the visual was cool, but I ignored Yankee Stadium # 1 and can’t say the remaining games hold a great deal of appeal.
Good for the NHL for trying, and as far as I know, they may be succeeding mightily.
But like high school parties on successive weekends, they can’t all be great or memorable.
