Hi, this is Fred Wallace with ” Off the Wire “, brought to you by Hal Wright Chevrolet-Cadillac-GMC-Buick on the Sunset Strip in Owen Sound.
We were talking about Cameron Brace recently I was reminded of one of the all time great P.A. announcements at the Harry Lumley-Bayshore Community Centre.
I’ve been at the mic for decades and truly enjoy it no matter what sport or event, but every now, you feel the need to spice things up.
Like the time the local MPP and the newspaper had an ongoing tiff and we announced, ” Attention, Bill Murdoch…..Bill Murdoch, please call the Sun Times. “
Or during the 2003 President’s Cup Lacrosse Championship when we announced, ” Wayne Simmonds. Attention Wayne Simmonds…please call your parole officer immediately. “
In the case of Cameron Brace, on May 8th, 2011 he scored in overtime of Game 4 of the Robertson Cup to tie the series with St Mike’s at 2 games apiece on what I call ” the most significant breakaway in Attack history. “
By game 4, the tensions between the two clubs and the emotion level in Owen Sound and area was right off the map and truthfully, I got caught up in it- big time.
The crescendo of crowd noise built as Brace raced in from centre ice and climaxed when he sank the game winner behind JP Anderson in the Majors goal, touching off an explosion of sound that may have been the loudest ever in that building.
Knowing that no one could possibly hear me on the public address system over the uproar, I grabbed the mic, looked directly at the St Mike’s bench and, in a highly unprofessional manner, said, ‘ See Ya, Thursday. “
Good times…………….
I’m Fred Wallace
