Hi, this is Fred Wallace with ” Off the Wire “, brought to you by Hal Wright Chevrolet-Cadillac-GMC-Buick on the Sunset Strip in Owen Sound.
This is the 25th year of OHL Hockey in Owen Sound.
Last night, the Attack were at Windsor against the Spitfires, playing in the terrific WFCU Centre.
And while the WFCU Centre is a terrific facility, there’s part of me that somehow misses the old Windsor barn.
Among my earliest memories of what was known as the ” Madhouse on McDougall ” was a visit on Thursday February 1st, 1990.
The Zamboni had broken down prior to the warm up. It broke down after the warm up. It broke down again after the first. And then, you guessed it, broke down for good in the 2nd intermission prompting the Spitfire players to come onto the ice and push the machine off the ice surface.
Windsor wasn’t a powerhouse in 89-90, but spurred by the team unity of pushing the Zamboni, they erased a 3 goal deficit in the 3rd period and beat the Platers that night 8-5.
The fans, and the neighbourhood in Windsor were rugged too.
One night, Mike Morrone and his brother had a tag team bout in the parking lot outside the Barn. On at least two occasions, the Plater bus was robbed; once for CD’s, the other time coach Dave Siciliano’s beautiful leather jacket was swiped.
And of course, the Windsor Arena was the sight for the lowest moment in Owen Sound history- Jeff Kugel Night.
But we’ll save that for another time.
This is the 25th year of OHL Hockey in Owen Sound
I’m Fred Wallace
