Hi, this is Fred Wallace with ” Off the Wire “, brought to you by Hal Wright Chevrolet-Cadillac-GMC-Buick on the Sunset Strip in Owen Sound.
This is the 25th year of OHL Hockey in Owen Sound.
To launch the season Gemel Smith posted a pair of hat tricks last month, and Holden Cook posted one on Saturday night & it got me wondering……..so I checked out the history of OHL hat tricks in Owen Sound.
With the hat tricks this year, Owen Sound players have posted 121 hat tricks since 1989.
The all time leader is…….Andrew Brunette with 8 hat tricks.
Ted Miskolczi who played three-quarters of a season here as an overager in 1990-91 had 5 in less than one year
Six hat tricks have been recorded by defencemen, interestingly, the only one to do it, but did not advance to play in the National Hockey League, Jamie Sokolsky, was the first to do it.
Mark Giordano, Bobby Sanguinetti, Theo Peckham & Andrej Sekera who had 2 hat tricks were the other blueliners to sink 3.
Sekera is a rarity in that his 2 hat tricks were in back to back games: Oct 30th, 2005 @ Plymouth & November 2nd at home to Barrie.
The only player to turn the feat of posting back to back hat tricks for Owen Sound was Josh Bailey.
The first hat trick in the Bailey sequence was a 5 goal game at Erie which tied a franchise record for goals in game, first done in Owen Sound by Wes Goldie.
Bailey’s second hat trick in sequence was the night they opened the GMC Centre in Oshawa.
Only twice in the 25 year history of the franchise have two players scored hat tricks in the same game, and that was quite some time ago; Chris Dricsoll & Jeff Perry did it in 1991 against London, while Kirk Maltby & Brunette accomplished it the next season against Guelph
Also interesting, only one underage has ever scored three times in one game and that was in the 5th game in Owen Sound franchise history when Steve Parson got the hat trick at North Bay.
And as a footnote, I didn’t count Daniel Milne’s hat trick at Kingston last season since the third marker was a shootout goal, albeit a game winner.
The complete history of Plater & Attack hat tricks is posted at www.bayshorebroadcasting.ca
In the 25th year of OHL Hockey in Owen Sound,
