On a night when a lot of things weren’t going well on the ice, and certainly not in the sound booth at the JD McArthur Arena, it was nice to encounter Mark Strohack.
Strohack, who scored the first OHL goal in Plater-Attack franchise history, was in the region on the weekend, coaching the Waterloo Wolves Novice team.
Escorted by his son, Grayden, Strohack made his way to centre ice to drop the ceremonial puck Saturday prior to the Attack-Peterborough game to launch the 25th season of OHL Hockey in Owen Sound.
Later in the night, Mark Strohack popped over to the new video scoreclock area to say hello, and the images of 1989 came rolling back.
While he’s best known for scoring the opening goal, his last weekend with the Platers was quite eventful.
Netminder Sean O’Hagan had to leave the team to attend a funeral, meaning Scott Ballantyne was the only goalie available for a game at Cobo Hall against Detroit.
Strohack, who was injured, was listed as the back up goalie, and even though he didn’t dress for the game, I’ve often wondered what might have happened…can you say, ” Connor Crisp ” ?
Plus, the trip home from Detroit that night was also eventful, and somewhat extended for Strohack, Jeff Perry, Grayden Reid & Jason Skellett.
But that’s a story for another day, and for the moment it was great to say hello to Mark Strohack as the 25th year of OHL Hockey in Owen Sound officially got rolling.
I’m Fred Wallace
