It seems every year and a half, I get reminded of the value of the St John Ambulance.
Last Saturday night at Hanover Raceway, the Rider Under Saddle ladies were staging another exhibition race when on the third turn, rider Maggie Jones was dislodged from ” Lollipop Gal “.
Jones hit the track with a thump and lay motionless while track employees tried hard to catch the riderless horse and prevent anything worse from occurring.
Night after night after night at Hanover Raceway, the St John Ambulance is on hand, just in case…….
Most nights, there’s no call for service, but Saturday, in a split second, they were first on the scene for assessment & treatment until the Grey County EMS Ambulance arrived to take Maggie Jones to the hospital where she was treated and released.
As mentioned, I’ve seen this scene played out at basketball courts, at track & field events and a few other locations through the years.
Not always required. Not always noticed. But when the need occurs, the St John Ambulance has always passed the test.
Hanover Raceway has their $ 30,000 ” Balanced Image ” Final Saturday night. I know the St John Ambulance will be there, but the hope is they won’t spend any time on the track
