The Owen Sound Leeder and Associate Pee Wees participated at the Provincial Lacrosse Championships in Whitby over the weekend.
The team completed the round robin portion with a record of 2 wins and 1 loss, defeating Peterborough #2 9-7, with goals coming from Jaden Goldie, Brodie Caskenette (3), Bryson Pruski, Brandon Stewart, Sam Shakes (2) and Carter McIlmoyle. In game 2, they were defeated by Uxbridge 5-3, goal scorers Stewart, Colin Kitto and Jesse Woods. In game 3, a must win situation, the team came through big, defeating Oakville #2, 4-1. Goal scorers were Luke Grimoldby, Travis Morrison (2) and Caskenette. The win tied 3 teams in the division , all with 2 and 1 records.
As a result, the tie breaking formula was needed to calculate which 2 teams would be moving on to the quarterfinals that afternoon. After waiting anxiously for news, the team was told by OLA officials that they were eliminated from further play. The boys were disappointed, but left knowing they gave their best.
The majority of the families returned to Owen Sound late Saturday afternoon thinking lacrosse was over for another year. It was a surprise at supper to get an email from the team manager saying there had been a mistake, and instead of being eliminated, should have finished first in our pool. The team was invited back to play in the quarter finals Sunday.
After departing Owen Sound at 6am, the boys were excited to have another chance. They made the most of it by defeating West Durham 6-2, with goals coming from Goldie, Dominic Millman, Caskenette(2), Kitto and Grimoldby. That win put them into the semi finals against Niagara on the Lake. Once again, the boys came through, winning 6-5. Goals were scored by Grimoldby(2), Morrison, Kitto (2) and Goldie.
The Championship game was against a skilled group from Wallaceburg. Unfortunately the long drive, early morning and 3rd game of the day did not go as planned and the boys were defeated 7-2, with goals coming from Kitto and Joel Coghlin.
