Hi, this is Fred Wallace with ” Off the Wire “, brought to you by Hal Wright Chevrolet-Cadillac-GMC-Buick on the Sunset Strip in Owen Sound.
There’s no doubt the most significant event in golf started yesterday with the 2013 British Open at The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers, a.k.a. Muirfield.
But the golf world that most of us know and exist in, has very little to do with national championships on historic courses.
Charity Golf is a far more frequent event for the vast majority of us and today, one of the longest running events in our region goes at Saugeen Golf Club.
The 18th annual Jeff Preston Celebrity Tournament actually opened last night with the silent auction plus the wine & cheese reception.
Today, golfers and celebrities of every description will hack away with the ultimate score being the funds generated for Muscular Dystrophy research, a total that last year bypassed the $ 1 million mark through the years.
In a neat twist, a portion of the funds generated this weekend will also be directed to Heart & Stroke research in conjunction with Port Elgin’s Brett MacLean who’s conducting a ball hockey tournament at Lakeshore Recreation through the weekend.
The British Open will get the coverage, but the Jeff Preston Celebrity Golf Tournament at Saugeen may be every bit as significant, if not more significant, in the world of golf.
I’m Fred Wallace
