Hi, this is Fred Wallace with ” Off the Wire “, brought to you by Hal Wright Chevrolet-Cadillac-GMC-Buick on the Sunset Strip in Owen Sound.
Owen Sound Minor Lacrosse & the Kazarian Family really don’t need my help conducting their annual showcase tournament- the Harry Kazarian Memorial Minor Lacrosse Tournament. It’s a good show, no question.
But if they did ask me for a suggestion, it would be this……..on Championship Sunday, schedule the Intermediate Championship Game for 9 am, and do so until the oldest age bracket illustrates they’re capable of acceptable sporting behaviour.
In the two of the last 3 or 4 years, the Intermediate Championship Final game has featured a full scale donnybrook at the completion of the contest.
Now, I understand fully lacrosse is a rugged and emotional sport, but in both cases, the game that preceded the post game fireworks was tame. Almost boring. In fact, in the case two years ago, I don’t think there were more than 2 penalties called.
What was called in the last couple of years were the police….. and the ambulance this year to attend to a nasty gash suffered, in what I viewed as a felony. Not that the recipient was entirely innocent and didn’t commit a crime as well. But that’s beside the point.
The point is the city of Owen Sound doesn’t need this.
The Kazarian Family, Minor Lacrosse and the volunteers work too hard to have their efforts soiled by a sequence of senseless moves.
And I’d think the police and emergency services have more important issues to deal with on a Sunday afternoon than a riot for the sake of posturing.
Therefore, until the Intermediate Division illustrates some responsibility & accountability as athletes, my recommendation is to play their Kazarian Tournament Championship Game at 9 am Sunday morning when the cops may have more time on their hand.
I’m Fred Wallace
