The rankings are no surprise to Owen Sound officials — after all, the City’s motto is “Where You Want to Live.”
However, the Mayor of Owen Sound is thrilled with the ranking by Money Sense magazine — listing the Scenic City as the 50th best city in Canada to live.
Deb Haswell says to jump from 133rd last year into the top 50 is significant — especially in a list of 200 Cities.
Manager of Economic Development and Tourism Steve Furness tells us they are happy their efforts to improve the City have been recognized.
Owen Sound is also ranked as the 25th best small City in Canada and the 15th best place to retire.
We were the first to tell you about the Money Sense rankings Thursday — they are based on a low crime rate, the number of doctors, wealth, culture, and weather among others.
Haswell says we all know Owen Sound is a great place to live — and it’s great that the word is starting to get out.
Furness tells us they will use the rankings to market the City to attract new residents and businesses.
Furness notes many people who spend their summers vacationing are looking for new communities to move to — and he believes the rankings will help.
Money Sense lists Calgary, Alberta as the best City in to live in Canada.
Other notable communities include Burlington at number 3, Oakville is 5th, Ottawa is 6th, Stratford is at number 14 and Toronto is 28th.
News Release from Owen Sound
MoneySense Magazine has ranked The City of Owen Sound as the 50th best place in Canada to live, a significant improvement from last years 138th ranking. Owen Sound was also ranked as the 25th best small city (100,000 population or less), and the 15th best place to retire in Canada.
The MoneySense magazine rankings highlight what we already know in Owen Sound, that this is an outstanding place to live, says Steve Furness, Manager of Economic Development and Tourism. The criteria considered a number of factors like economic indicators, percentage of population that bikes to work, weather, availability of doctors and the crime rate. Taken together, Owen Sound ranks right up with the best cities in Canada and outperforms many of our counter parts in Ontario.
We have been saying for some time that Owen Sound is where you want to live and MoneySense Magazines ranking puts us at the 50th best place in Canada to live. We are not just a great place to retire, we are one of the best cities in Canada to live, says Mayor Deborah Haswell.
The Economic Development and Tourism Department will use the rankings to market the City to attract new residents, businesses and investment.
