If you are looking for a good used car, there is a website that will make sure the vehicle you are buying wasn’t stolen from its rightful owner.
The Canadian Police Information Centre website is an information tool operated by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and it is available across Canada.
OPP Constable Jim Edwards says the website has been out for a few years and allows people to access their database to find out if, in fact, the vehicle they are buying was stolen.
He says people can search by vehicle identification number (VIN), license plate number, or bicycle serial number.
Edwards says the results will come back either “No records were found” or “Possibly stolen”.
He says if the number of the vehicle comes up as stolen you are asked to contact your local police detachment to verify the result.
Edwards says no other details about the vehicle will be released when using the search tool.
He says the website will not ask or reveal any personal information of the legal owner or the interested buyer.
Edwards says the website encompasses cars, trucks, vans, SUVs, motorcycles, snowmobiles, bicycles, and all-terrain vehicles.
He says he encourages people to use the website to check and see if the vehicle they are buying is stolen.
