The auto racing tracks in our region have been closed for more than a month, the green flag not expected to drop until mid Spring at Varney and Sauble.
However, once the snow flies there’s a number of snowmobile racers in our region who will be more than eager to hit the line.
The first group to release their schedule was the Canadian Snowcross Racing Association which will open December 7th at Ottawa Valley.
I did a quick once-over of the snowcross sked and saw the following locations; Ottawa, Cochrane, Rouyn-Noranda, Lindsay, Barrie, Valcourt, Sudbury, Kitchener and then the finale at Barrie.
Or put another way, the location I did not see for 2012-13 was Owen Sound.
Snowcross racing enjoyed a very solid existence in Owen Sound, give or take the odd weather fiasco.
However, the new facility on the east side of Owen Sound apparently has ended the run of snowcross in the Scenic City.
And that’s a shame.
In a city and region that boasts remarkable, consistent and stable events year after year; Summerfolk, Salmon Spectacular, Ground Hog Weekend or Pumpkinfest, you’d hope there could be a spot, somewhere in the vicinity, for a major Winter sporting event like snowcross.
