The Owen Sound Minor Hockey Group staged their first of two tournaments this year, conducting the annual Fall Classic for Bantams & Midgets over the weekend.
This was the first year in which the new Julie McArthur Regional Rec Centre was utilized and from all appearances, everything went smoothly.
Sunday, I watched 7 games at the JD McArthur Arena as part of Championship Sunday.
Starting at 7 am, I watched the Midget quarterfinals, Bantam semifinals, Midget Semifinals and then the Championship Games in both divisions.
The Bantam Championship was won by the local entry, the Owen Sound Gaviller & Company Attack who downed the Lindsay Muskies 4-1 in the Final.
Gaviller and Company were the best team in the Bantam Division, but to Lindsay’s credit, the game wasn’t decided until early in the third period when Brady Stewart gave Owen Sound a 2 goal bulge.
Meanwhile, the Midget Final was an even better game and capped a remarkable Sunday for the Bracebridge Bears.
The Bears were fourth in divisional play going to Sunday’s playdowns and they put together wins over the Barrie Colts & Owen Sound Cresent Midgets and then concluded the day with a come-from-behind 3-2 win over the Mississauga Ojibwa.
Interestingly, the Midget Championship Game was very fast, the fastest game of the day, which says something since the Bears and Ojibwa were playing their third game in 8 hours.
I’m guessing those kids slept as well as I did Sunday night.
