The first week of October is eventful on the local sporting calendar with regular events and conceivably historic events all ahead of us.
Among the regular events that has grown very nicely is the ” Friday Night Lights ” Football game.
The game, which takes its moniker from the 2004 movie, started in Owen Sound 5 years ago, taking the traditional OSCVI-West Hill rivalry up a notch in terms of visibility.
The Falcons and Raiders meet once a year for football bragging rights in the city, and in recent years, rather than a Fall afternoon, the game has been shifted to an evening contest.
In order to do so, lights have been imported to the field of play and the game has developed a new life.
First, the evening start under the lights creates a very professional feel for the players involved which must be a rush for players on both teams.
Second, a game at night, for a lot of families means they can get out and make the game as opposed to an afternoon contest where Mom & Dad are working and the brothers and sisters are generally in school.
Finally, for the students, and for the community at large, it also creates a very social environment surrounding the competition on the field.
Friday Night Lights this week at West Hill. Junior scrimmage at 6:30 pm followed by the Falcons and Raiders Senior clash at 7:15 pm.
