The owner of the Hope Bay Campground at 2 Hope Bay Road, has the blessing of South Bruce Peninsula Council, to make plans to build his family a home and a workshop to house his equipment.
In a recorded vote, only Councillors Janice Jackson and Marilyn Bowman voted against, because of residents concerns in the area.
Owner Leonard Koekkoek was on hand to make a presentation and so were many neighbours of the campsite who were against the rezoning designation of the land.
It boils down to the letter “H.”
The land is currently zoned C4-H — Resort Commercial Holding — which effectively stymied any construction on the land.
Council approved removing the “holding” symbol to permit future development.
Neighbour Pamela Sartorelli, whose property abuts the campground, says removing the designation clouds up exactly what can be built there and if affects the rest of the residents.
Koekkoek says the family home and workshop are his priorities although down the road he would like to construct some roofed accommodation in an area that is now dedicated to tent camping.
He says no matter what he does, he has to go through the process of applying for building permits like anyone else.
Hope Bay Campground has close to 200 seasonal sites to accommodate all types of vacationers.
