Georgian Bluffs has declared the Kilsyth Community Hall a surplus property.
Council made the final decision at a recent council meeting.
Mayor Alan Barfoot says that paves the way for demolition of the Hall — and subsequent appraisal of the land.
As we first told you back in April, council was questioning whether the old and run down Hall was sustainable for the municipality.
Barfoot said at that time if certain facilities don’t get enough use, it becomes too costly to continue operating and maintaining them.
He notes council is currently weighing a number of options for the property — including demolishing the hall and retaining the land for municipal purposes, or putting it up for public sale.
Barfoot says an adjoining property owner has also expressed interest in possibly purchasing the land in order to make it part of their property.
He tells Bayshore Broadcasting News they will consider all of their options once they know the market value of the property.
Barfoot adds he’s a little hesitant to demolish a building that is still actively used by the public — albeit rarely — but he supports councils decision to declare it a surplus property.
Kilsyth Hall is across from Derby Public School on Grey Road 5.
