You’ll excuse me if I don’t get ramped up by the latest labour talks between the National Hockey League and the Players Association.
Here’s the story to this point; the NHL tabled an offer that called for salary reductions and other concessions from the players.
After a delay, the players came back with a proposal that called for salary reductions and other concessions on their part.
But it wasn’t enough.
NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said last week it’s obvious the two sides aren’t on the same page and there was little in the Players Association that would interest the owners.
Plus, Bettman claimed with conviction that if a new collective bargaining agreement is not in place when the current agreement expires September 15th, the league will lockout the players.
And you know what, that’s where I choose to leave it.
Other sports services will give you the minutia, the opinions, the progress and the yata, yata, yata.
I will not.
It strikes me now in my 50’s that as much as I like hockey, I don’t care who plays for who, and I don’t care who owns which team- just play hockey.
And if the NHL can’t play hockey, there’s plenty of hockey options to capture my interest.
So until a settlement is near, or one is reached, you’ll hear precious little about the dispute from this microphone
I’m Fred Wallace
