Owen Sound Grey Motors United will wrap up their regular season in the Premier Division of the York Region Soccer League with a couple of road games in the next few days.
Sunday night, Grey Motors will return to where their season started, at Alliston when they go against Alliston Arsenal.
Then two nights later, Owen Sound concludes the regular season when they visit Newmarket Sporting FC in what could be a showdown for first place.
Going into the weekend, based on the standings posted on the league web site, Grey Motors is tied with Newmarket & Orangeville Athletic for first place, with all 3 teams sitting at 22 points.
First place is up for grabs with Grey Motors, Orangeville, Newmarket & even Alliston all within striking range
Also within striking range are the Owen Sound Strikers.
The Strikers concluded their regular season on Tuesday night, playing to a scoreless draw with Alliston Santos.
At 10-1 & 1, the Strikers won the North Division regular season title and as such have earned the right to graduate from Division One into the Premier Division next season.
So it’s conceivable that the 2013 York Region Premier Division could include two Owen Sound entries; Grey Motors and the Strikers.
Is that good for local soccer ? From this vantage point, I can’t see why not.
I’m Fred Wallace
