This is somewhat of a rare summer.
For the first time in quite some time, I’m not involved with a Canadian Fastball Championship tournament based in Owen Sound.
That’s not to say, I haven’t been at Duncan McLellan Park, or enjoyed it when I was there, in fact, I’m quite excited about seeing the playoff round starting this afternoon and climaxing with the 1-4, & 2-3 games tonight.
I missed the games yesterday as I was at Hanover Raceway, but on Wednesday there were a number of plays that stood out, maybe the best of which was a rapid relay by the Owen Sound Selects from centerfield to the cutoff man to the thirdbaseman which cut down an Oshawa batter trying to stretch a double into a triple.
Centerfield was actually a busy place on Wednesday as a member of the Wiarton Red Devils made a spectacular running, then diving catch.
Five teams will be eliminated today after a Consolation Round of sorts, leaving 8 to commence battle for the Championship beginning tomorrow.
Meanwhile, the ISC Championship begins this weekend in Midland, Michigan.
The Wiarton Nationals of the Bluewater League will be in the field of teams.
The Nationals open tomorrow afternoon against the Gillies-Huron Wellness squad.
A win by Wiarton would allow them to advance to a match against Jarvis in which the Nationals would be huge underdogs.
But this is fastball season, and sometimes, the highly unexpected can happen.
Have a great weekend.
I’m Fred Wallace
