After sitting idle for 15 years, Unit 1 at the Bruce nuclear generating station in Tiverton is almost ready to supply power to the province again.
The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission has given Bruce Power the go-ahead to power up the Unit 1 reactor.
That means Bruce Power can complete final safety checks over the next few weeks, in preparation for synchronization to Ontarios electricity grid.
Bruce Power Media Relations Officer James Scongack says synchronization won’t happen until sometime in the fall.
When it joins the provinces’ power grid, Unit 1 will produce enough hydro for half a million homes.
Unit 2 will come back online first once repairs to a generator are complete.
It’s all part of the nearly five billion dollar refurbishment of Units 1 and 2 at Bruce nuclear, which started in 2006.
