A bit of a rarity today as the Bluewater Track & Field Championships are set for Kincardine.
Kincardine has hosted the annual event for decades, it’s a great location with a top notch facility, but in previous years the affair was staged mid-week.
For many years, the Bluewater Championship was a one day competition, but in recent years, to allow a better flow of competitive events, the championship was split running on a Wednesday afternoon and then concluding the following day.
This year, for a variety of factors, the meet went back to a one day competition.
None of the issues leading to the one day-Monday competition are sinister or negative, but rather just a sign of changing times, both in the literal and figurative sense.
Walkerton District is changing physical locations which created an additional burden for the long time convenor of Track & Field who needed to finally step down after fulfilling a two year term that actually ran 14 years.
No one was especially quick to step up and when they did, the best scenario was to have today’s meet and I’m sure it will flow as smoothly as ever, with a hiccup here or there.
My concern is always for the long term vibrancy of Bluewater Track & Field. From my perspective, I truly believe it’s the ultimate athletic competition and the single most significant day on the Bluewater Athletic sporting calendar
