I had my first spin at the new Regional Rec Centre in Owen Sound over Easter Weekend, and I rather liked it.
Last Friday afternoon as part of the 15th annual SMHLPA Oldtimers Tournament, a tournament many are just now recovering from, the Red 35’s from the SMHLPA played Axe’s Aces in a key semifinal game, maybe the biggest game ever played at the Rec Centre to that point.
Whatever.
On a gorgeous Good Friday, I thought there was plenty of parking space, the lobby was nice and big and navigating into the arena and finding the dressing room was simple.
As for the ice surface, I thought it was pretty good, especially considering the pace of the play the Aces function at.
I also thought the ice was commendable because truthfully, it’s a new facility and the weather wasn’t exactly prime hockey weather.
Sure there are modifications, rectifications and alterations to be done as we go forward with the arena facility.
I’m sure the pool facility will be the same in its infancy.
But the greater point is with two new ice surfaces, arena facilities and a terrific pool complex on the near horizon, isn’t it nice to have a new, highly functional facility that opens the door for any number of events for any number of years in the future.
