The 10th annual Crone Cup was staged last week at the JD McArthur Arena.
The annual Girls Hockey Challenge was won by the West Hill Lady Raiders who beat their cross city rivals, the OSCVI Falcons 3-1.
There has been discussion that the 10th Crone Cup would be the last Crone Cup, and if so, what a great sendoff this would be.
First of all, the game was terrific.
The Lady Raiders, certainly favored going into this year’s Crone Cup game, rode a hat trick from Laura McKenzie to the victory.
But the Lady Falcons for their part played with spirit and nearly tied the game at 2 when a blistering shot nailed the crossbar in the 3rd period.
The look on the faces of the two teams afterwards illustrated what a blast the two teams had playing.
Next, the atmosphere in the building was very good, from the elementary schools rooting for their future high school teams, to the dance troupe that did ” Party Rock Anthem ” with a great deal of zest.
Sure the timing mechanism for the hardest shot competition failed, and the West Hill Choir was asleep at the switch meaning the anthem got played twice, but these kind of mini-fiascos are all part and parcel of what makes this event special, the show goes on.
Most of all, among the hockey & the fun, two Owen Sound High Schools continued a fundraising legacy that has benefited many causes through a decade.
If the 10th annual Crone Cup was the last of its kind, then it was a great way to go out.
