Thank goodness, that’s over.
The NHL All Star Game at Ottawa, I’m sure, was a cultural success, a tremendous showcase for the league and the sport, and great for the economy in the Nation’s Capital, but please don’t count me among the interested.
Not this year, not for the last 3 decades and likely not for the next 3 decades going forward.
In a world filled with images, marketing and ploys to make me want to consume any given product, I find the NHL All Star Game actually to be an insult.
The latest gimmick is the ” draft ” of the players and the subsequent sideplots that are manufactured and then examined, if not hyped, to max.
Come on !
I care almost as much about that draft as I do about the draft staged daily on Donalda Street before the daily road hockey game.
The Skills Competition ? Come on.
And the ” game ” ?
Come on !
Why try and manufacture stories and issues and drama and plotlines that just aren’t there ?
Truthfully, most of the all star storylines are offshoots of the real games in the real season and having them converge in this holiday holding tank is a waste of my time, and I’d think, a waste of almost everyone’s time.
You want to know what the best part of the All Star Game is ?
Tomorrow, when there’s 13 REAL NHL games scheduled
Can’t wait.
I’m Fred Wallace
